Annabelle 2: La Creación: Un sacerdote bendecía el set, asegura David F. Sandberg, director de la película

Working predominantly in short film before hitting big screens last year in his directorial debut, this is the second time that Sandberg time ever has graced a Hollywood set – the first being for his own adapted short piece Lights Out. His explosive trajectory as a big-budget horror director is impressive to say the least, with a style that’s all his own and an enthusiasm for creating creepy stories that’s impossible to emulate.

‘On Annabelle: Creation, I’d already made my first movie and now I knew more how things worked, I didn’t have that same pressure. On this one, it was just a lot of fun – you get to work with such talented people and you can do all these things that would just be impossible to do in the world of short film.’

Sandberg still takes inspiration from his past short film works however, utilising Attic Panic in a particularly fraught scene in an abandoned barn. ‘People were telling us that we should make a movie out of Attic Panic, but we felt like there’s really not enough story there for a feature film. So instead, I thought I could still recreate parts of it in a feature film... It’s alright to steal it if it’s from yourself!’

Annabelle: Creation also served as the first time Sandberg has made a film using an already established franchise, previously making short horror movies from his own creative content. Even though it was a step away from the norm for the director, he didn’t find the process restrictive: ‘It was quite freeing – it’s a very different movie, especially to the first Annabelle… The only things that James Wan wanted was to make sure we had these references to The Nun and the universe at large.
